Blue – Violet Light & Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation
Too much blue – violet light from all forms of digital devices can be harmful. Viewing digital devices at night can cause sleep disturbances and a dysfunction of the natural circadian rhythm*
*the cycle that tells our body when to sleep, rise, eat – regulating many physiological processes.
- The American Macular Degeneration Foundation warns that retinal damage caused by blue light “blue light hazard” may lead to macular degeneration.
- Too much exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun increases the risks of eye diseases, including cataracts, growths on the eye and cancer.
- Children are more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage than adults, and sunburn during childhood increases the risk of skin cancer and eye damage (particularly cataracts) later in life, and suppresses the immune system.
- Much of the lifetime UV radiation exposure is received during the first 18 years of life.
